Undergraduate Status

Educational Status

In order for undergraduate students to gain a comprehensive interdisciplinary understanding of the field, mathematics, physics, biology, and chemistry are equally covered in great detail. Students are provided with the capability to apply the fundamental knowledge and concepts they gain from these areas of inquiry to various engineering fields such as Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Materials Engineering, Biological Engineering, Imaging Instrument Engineering, Therapy Engineering, Opto Engineering, Micro Engineering, and Nano Engineering.

Experimental work is strongly emphasized and is a thoroughgoing part of students' coursework, starting from the second semester of the sophomore year through to the first semester of the senior year. In addition, starting from the first semester of their junior year all students are assigned to specific professors and are encouraged how to author at least one SCI journal article before graduating. In furtherance of this requirement, biology and biomaterial, and electronic and optics laboratories are made available to students, and when necessary the professor’s research equipment and facilities can be used as well. As for the graduate school program, the assigned professor works with the student in their field of study, as well as helping them in advanced studies in fields that are common to many areas of bioengineering.

Research Status

Although there are specific research areas within biological engineering, the school's research is especially concentrated in the core areas of medical convergence technology, such as Biochips, Bioartificial Organs, Nanobiomaterials, Bioimaging, Tissue Engineering, Nanobiophotonics, and Bioelectronics. Each professor in the School possesses outstanding research capabilities and each as a primary author annually presents at least 5 to 20 SCI journal articles. They are steadily expending efforts to develop core source technology in order to obtain greater competitiveness for Korean industry. In addition to a 66m2 Clean Room where micro and Nanosize experiments can be conducted, the School also has cell biology, chemistry, optics, and bioelectronic laboratories. There are also plans to expand the floor space and facilities of the laboratories.
